Our Voice on Bowel Screening

In 2024/25, we can delivered a series of our HealthWise sessions across East London to promote Cancer Screening amongst global majority communities. Communities shared the barriers and challenges they experience accessing cancer screening. Please read the Our Voice on Cancer Screening I report for more insight. What emerged from this work was the need for health literacy in an accessible format. So in 2025/26 we set out to co-design, co-produce and evaluate health literacy videos in mother tongue as a way to drive uptake of bowel screening.

Summary

This report draws together insight from community research across the UK to set out the conditions under which trust between communities and health services is built, sustained, and lost.

Key findings

Trust is relational, not transactional. It is earned through presence and follow-through, and it collapses fastest when communities feel spoken at rather than listened to. Translated audio content in community languages, alongside trust information increases confidence. People were more likely to participate in bowel screening now they understand the importance and what to do! Read the full report for more information.
